Aim and Conditions

  • The Colloquium begins on Sunday August 21 with supper (approx. 6pm), and ends on Saturday August 27 with breakfast.

The aim of the Colloquium and School is to present lectures based on simple examples reviewing mathematical principles of modern physical theories. The scope of intended or possible topics is rather broad and miscellaneous: differential geometry, Hamiltonian systems (reduction theory), quantum theory of systems with many degrees of freedom, quantum measurement, problems of quantum information, contractions of algebras, dualities in string theory, etc. It is supposed that some lectures of a "semiphenomenological" nature (e.g. elementary particle QFT, quantum theory of solids) illuminating connections between different approaches to physical theory will be also presented.

The important aim of the Colloquium is, however, also to provide opportunity for the diploma and PhD students and other young scientists to present and discuss their results and possibly to obtain their first experience with such a presentation.

The Colloquium and School is intended to be rather informal: The final version of the program (the topic and duration of some lectures, their inclusion or omission etc.) might undergo changes even during the Colloquium, based on the actual situation, and following a consensus among the participants.

Depending on the weather, the program can be modified and relatively large part of the duration of the Colloquium and School can be spent by tourism; it can be expected that scientific discussions will often continue also during the trips. There are many beautiful and inspiring places in the Tatra mountains in a relatively small area (circ. 30 km x 15 km) of these "small high mountains".

All participants and accompanied persons will be accommodated in Hotel Academia (in single or double rooms, with possibility of an additional bed), and also all lectures will be held in the hotel. Hotel Academia is approximately 1.5 km away from interesting tourist nature trails. The hotel is approximately 2 km away from settlement Tatranská Lomnica (800 m above see level - a tourist regional hub) and about 3 km away from the station of a cablecar running - when extended - to the summit of the Lomnický Štít Peak (2632 m above sea level). All hotel rooms are equipped with a bathroom, toilette, radio and a TV - SET with satellite programs. Wi-Fi Internet connection is available everywhere in the hotel. The hotel staff will gladly serve you with any information in various languages including English, German, Polish, Hungarian, Russian or Croatian.
